Pet Wellness Exam

What to Expect at a Pet Wellness Exam

Puppies and kittens require several appointments during their first year to ensure they receive all the necessary vaccinations and get off to the best possible start in life. Once your pet reaches a year old, we recommend bringing them to Marketplace Veterinary Clinic at least once a year for a wellness exam. Below are some of the key services you can expect during this exam.

Core and Optional Vaccinations

Certain vaccinations are required by law for household pets, such as the rabies vaccine, which needs a booster every three years. Our team will inform you about the mandatory inoculations, ensuring you stay compliant with city regulations and avoid potential fines. Additionally, our veterinarian will discuss optional vaccines based on your pet’s health history and lifestyle, such as the feline leukemia vaccine. Our staff will administer these shots and provide you with aftercare instructions to help your pet recover comfortably at home.

Parasite Control

Even pets that stay indoors can be at risk of harboring parasites. During the wellness exam, our staff will recommend specific parasite control measures, such as using flea collars or medicated shampoos. We will also assess the risks your pet faces based on their breed, age, size, and habits, and suggest preventive treatments to keep them parasite-free.

Behavioral Concerns

Behavioral issues are a common topic of concern for pet parents. Perhaps your dog won’t stop digging in the house despite your best efforts, or your cat has started missing the litter box. These are just a couple of examples of issues that can be addressed during the annual wellness exam. Our veterinarian can provide advice and strategies to correct these behaviors and improve your pet’s overall well-being.

As dogs and cats reach middle age, typically around seven years old, we recommend increasing the frequency of wellness exams to twice a year. This proactive approach allows us to detect and address age-related health issues early.
