What Are the Causes of Atopic Dermatitis?

•           Pollen

•           Dust

•           Dust mites

•           Dander

•           Grasses

•           Ragweed

•           Fleas

How Can Atopic Dermatitis be Treated?

Our veterinary team always begins with a thorough exam before any diagnosis is made. In the case of atopic dermatitis, we perform a visual assessment of the affected area, and may also order blood tests, or an IDAT (intradermal allergy test) to determine the specific cause of the allergy. Once we find the cause we may prescribe some of the following treatments:

•           Cortisone/steroids (oral, cream, or spray)

•           Antihistamines

•           Antibiotics

•           Antifungal medication

•           Dietary changes

•           Medicated shampoo

We may also suggest some things you can do at home, such as:

•           Increased grooming

•           Washing pet bedding 2–3 times a week

•           Wiping down your pet when they come back from being outdoors

•           Extra vacuuming
